Diploma in Optometry Program Structure The Diploma in Optometry is a two-year full-time program with 3 semesters for each year and an annual intake of 30 candidates per batch. The course helps to train optometrists to independently perform the tasks of routine clinical eye examination including refraction, to detect any pathological disorders of the eye and system. It also train optometrists to independently prescribe all types of optical corrections including spectacles, contact lenses, low vision aids, and vision therapy. Introduced in the year 2015, the Diploma in Optometry has successfully met the needs of the ophthalmic industry in Sri Lanka.

Objectives

  • To train optometrists to independently perform the tasks of routine clinical eye examination including refraction, to detect any pathological disorders of the eye and system.
  • To train optometrists to independently prescribe all types of optical corrections including spectacles, contact lenses, low vision aids, vision therapy eye exercises.
  • To be able to satisfy the needs of the ophthalmic industry as a whole.
Eligibility Criteria 

Academic Qualifications

  • The applicant must have successfully completed G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) examination in the Bio and Maths streams and possess 3 passes (old syllabus 4 passes) in a single attempt.
